Former CIA Chief George Tenet joins Illumio board to boost AI cybersecurity

Today

George J. Tenet, former Director of Central Intelligence, has joined the board of directors at Illumio.

Tenet's appointment is expected to strengthen Illumio's position in breach containment within the cybersecurity sector, as the company continues to develop its AI-driven security solutions for hybrid and multi-cloud environments.

Andrew Rubin, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Illumio, described Tenet's role within the board as critical to advancing the company's goals in the current cybersecurity landscape. "George Tenet embodies leadership in the best and most challenging circumstances," Rubin said. "His deep understanding of cybersecurity, national security, business, and mission-driven teamwork will be instrumental in advancing our vision during this pivotal time for both Illumio and the industry. George has been a mentor, advisor, and supporter of Illumio since our earliest days, and we are honored to have him officially join our Board."

Tenet's professional experience includes leading the Central Intelligence Agency, where he was involved in the evolution of intelligence gathering and analysis to address the shift towards global terrorism and cyber threats. During his tenure, Tenet expanded and modernised the CIA's Counterterrorist Center and coordinated operations that contributed to United States national security following the attacks of 9/11.

He played a key role in efforts to update intelligence practices through the integration of new technologies and the promotion of collaboration between agencies to address new security challenges. As part of his leadership, Tenet helped to establish In-Q-Tel, now known as IQT, which is an independent strategic investment firm that supports startups in adapting their products for both government use and commercial success.

Tenet's contributions have been recognised across both the public and private sectors, where he has served in advisory capacities on matters of cybersecurity and national defence.

After leaving public service, Tenet spent 17 years at investment bank Allen & Company LLC in New York, serving as Chairman for 12 of those years.

Speaking about his new position, Tenet stated: "Cybersecurity is no longer just a technical challenge; it's a strategic imperative for every organisation. Illumio's approach to breach containment, powered by an AI-driven security graph, represents the kind of forward-thinking innovation needed to counter today's sophisticated threats. I'm honored to join them in this mission."

Tenet joins Illumio at a time when the company's breach containment platform, based on its proprietary AI security graph, is being offered as a solution to help organisations identify, mitigate and contain cyber threats within complex IT environments. Illumio has recently launched Illumio Insights and continues to deliver Zero Trust segmentation products that are designed to help organisations address cyber risks after a breach has occurred.

The company's technology provides tools to help organisations reduce the spread of cyberattacks and maintain operational resilience in the face of increasing threats to information security.
