Spectrum Consulting has appointed Darryl van Rensburg as Business Development Director, adding another senior executive to the Auckland-based technology firm's leadership team as it expands its focus on sovereign infrastructure, cybersecurity and AI readiness.

Van Rensburg, widely known as DVR, joins Spectrum after more than two decades working with organisations across New Zealand's commercial and government sectors on technology transformation initiatives.

The appointment will see him lead business development efforts centred on secure business transformation, localised technology environments and AI adoption strategies. Spectrum said van Rensburg will work with organisations navigating increasing demands around data governance, security and operational resilience as generative AI deployments accelerate.

The move follows a broader leadership expansion at Spectrum over the past year under Country Manager Marty Bennett and Chief Technology Officer Deane Jessep. The company has also added senior executives and advisers across finance, governance and technology functions as it develops its sovereign cloud and AI strategy.

AI focus

Spectrum has increasingly positioned itself around sovereign technology services, including cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity, data protection and AI platforms designed for enterprise and government environments.

Last year, the company appointed Jessep as Chief Technology Officer to lead initiatives focused on cloud governance, cyber resilience, enterprise computing and sovereign AI services. Spectrum said at the time that New Zealand organisations were facing growing challenges around cloud expenditure, AI implementation and data sovereignty.

The company has also outlined five strategic technology areas spanning enterprise computing, networking, assessment and monitoring, cyber resilience, data protection and sovereign AI.

Van Rensburg's appointment extends that strategy into customer engagement and business development as organisations evaluate how AI systems are deployed and governed.

"The current scramble to adopt generative AI is turning New Zealand organizations into digital vassals, blindly handing over their most critical assets to offshore entities. This isn't just naive; it is a direct threat to our National and Māori Data Sovereignty. I joined Spectrum because they refuse to participate in the compromise of New Zealand's digital borders. True transformation doesn't start with a shiny new algorithm; it demands a hardened, localized, and secure foundation first," said Darryl van Rensburg, Business Development Director, Spectrum Consulting.

Leadership growth

The appointment comes during a period of executive growth for Spectrum.

In recent months, the company has appointed Billy Aucamp as Chief Financial Officer, Jeremy Foster as Director and John Marshall as Board Advisor. Spectrum said those appointments completed a leadership transformation led by Bennett and Jessep.

The company has also publicly outlined plans to expand its engineering and infrastructure teams as demand grows for sovereign technology services and critical infrastructure support.

Spectrum operates from Auckland and Wellington and works with enterprise, government and infrastructure customers across New Zealand. The company has described its focus as helping organisations manage complex technology environments spanning cloud platforms, networking, cybersecurity and enterprise infrastructure.

Sovereignty push

The company said van Rensburg's experience across government and enterprise sectors aligns with its focus on keeping critical data and systems under New Zealand jurisdiction as organisations expand their AI capabilities.

"We are thrilled to welcome DVR to our leadership team. His deep expertise in both commercial and government sectors, combined with his uncompromising stance on data sovereignty, aligns perfectly with our 'People First' philosophy. Darryl understands that as organizations scale their AI initiatives, keeping data governed, secure, and unequivocally under New Zealand jurisdiction is a non-negotiable," said Marty Bennett, Country Manager, Spectrum Consulting.

Originally from Durban, South Africa, van Rensburg travelled extensively before settling permanently in Auckland, where he has built his career working with organisations across the public and private sectors.
