CISO of Cequence sets 2023 goals focusing on security growth

Today

Randolph Barr, Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) at Cequence, has outlined his professional resolutions for the coming year, focusing on enhancing executive communication, engaging with the wider security community, and supporting emerging security talent in the Philippines.

Barr's first resolution is to improve his interactions with executive colleagues to better align security efforts with business success. He noted, "I come across one or two leaders each year who appear to have a misunderstanding or to underestimate the significance of security activities. I understand how important these efforts are, but the message isn't getting through, which can get frustrating to say the least."

To this end, Barr plans to adapt his communication strategy based on individual preferences. "This year, I aim to learn more about each leader's preferred methods of information processing and communication. I must modify my strategy, whether it is by providing short and specific updates, having casual conversations, or coordinating security with their strategic goals," he explained.

Additionally, Barr wants to shift the narrative from fear-based discussions to one that highlights security as a tool for innovation and growth. "I want every leader to view security as a reliable ally in accomplishing their objectives. I think that by adjusting my approach, I can strengthen my engagement and realise some improvements on my security program," he added.

In his second resolution, Barr aims to increase his involvement with the broader security community beyond CISO-only events. "I now understand the great need to interact with the larger security community beyond CISO-only gatherings and dinners this year to network with future security practitioners and fresh talent," Barr said.

He emphasised the value of engaging with diverse perspectives in the field, stating, "As in-person meetings make a strong comeback, I am excited to be part of active security groups where deep connections are created by shared experiences and honest communication."

According to Barr, these interactions offer opportunities for growth and knowledge sharing. "By means of these exchanges, I hope to understand the tooling and techniques others have discovered, whether quite successful or not so successful in enhancing their security initiatives," he noted.

As part of his third resolution, Barr is committed to aiding aspiring security professionals in finding meaningful careers, particularly aiming to support talent in the Philippines. "My annual resolution as a CISO is to assist aspirant security professionals in finding meaningful positions so that I may be giving back to the Philippines," Barr stated.

Past collaborations with university academics have revealed challenges such as outdated curricula and limited local opportunities. In response, Barr seeks to bridge the gap between academia and industry. "I want to expand this project this year by interacting with nearby companies to close the knowledge-gap between academia and industry," he mentioned.

He highlighted the importance of equipping educators with the necessary tools and information for current security roles, adding, "Understanding how we may provide teachers with the tools and information they need to train students for current security responsibilities is one of my aims."

Barr is keen on creating pathways for graduates to use their degrees effectively in the tech field. "Working with the professors and other companies, I can provide routes to guarantee that they—and upcoming graduates—achieve their career goals," he asserted.
