OpenSSL funds six Australian students for Prague conference

OpenSSL Corporation is funding six Australian university students to attend the OpenSSL Conference in Prague. The places will go to students from Monash University, the University of New South Wales and the University of Sydney's MathQuEST centre.

The programme covers return flights, five nights of accommodation, conference registration and a place in a tutorial run by David Hook and Megan Woods of the Legion of the Bouncy Castle. The selected students are Bahar Abbas Pour and Yuxuan Xu from Monash, Wilton Lu and Alex Vong from UNSW, and Jay Taylor and Yaqing Song from MathQuEST.

Each institution chose its own candidates from honours level or above. Selection focused on interest in cryptography or cyber security, and in open-source software.

The Legion of the Bouncy Castle helped with the selection process through its links with the universities. Hook, co-founder of the Legion of the Bouncy Castle, is coordinating the intake.

The initiative comes as some traditional routes into cryptographic engineering are changing. A previous post-quantum cryptography implementation project for the Australian Cyber Security Centre, run by the Legion of the Bouncy Castle, took three months and involved a dozen graduate students and academics. It was set up to implement Round 3 finalists in the US National Institute of Standards and Technology post-quantum cryptography competition.

Hook said similar work was later repeated on a much smaller scale with AI tools. After a later set of finalists was announced in a second NIST selection process, three people completed equivalent work in five days.

That shift has reduced the scope for long apprenticeship-style projects that once gave students direct exposure to serious cryptographic development work. The conference initiative is intended to offer another route into that environment by placing students alongside researchers, maintainers and developers working in open-source cryptography.

Changing route

The Prague conference will bring together participants from the OpenSSL ecosystem and the wider cryptography community over three days. For the six students, the trip offers direct access to a technical network that can be hard to reach early in an academic career, particularly from Australia.

Hook linked the effort to his own early experience of conferences in Australia, where overseas speakers were uncommon and research budgets were limited. That background shaped the organisers' view that students should have earlier access to international technical communities.

The Bouncy Castle connection runs through the scheme. The Legion of the Bouncy Castle has operated as an Australian registered charity since 2013, with a focus on cyber security education, while the Bouncy Castle cryptography APIs are widely used open-source libraries in managed-runtime environments.

That makes the arrangement notable within the open-source security world, where projects and communities often overlap through shared contributors, standards work and implementation efforts. OpenSSL remains one of the most widely deployed cryptographic libraries, while Bouncy Castle is embedded in a broad range of software that depends on managed runtimes for secure communications and related functions.

Open-source focus

The students will attend the full conference programme as well as the Bouncy Castle tutorial at the start of their week. By covering the main costs that often prevent students from travelling, the organisers have removed one of the biggest practical barriers to international participation.

For Australian universities, the selection also highlights growing local interest in cryptography and cyber security research tied to open-source development. MathQuEST, hosted by the University of Sydney, focuses on mathematics for quantum-era security and trust, while Monash and UNSW both have established research links in related computing and security fields.

The conference sits at the intersection of academic research, software maintenance and applied security engineering. That mix matters in cryptography, where many of the most significant tools are maintained as open-source software and implementation quality can be as important as theoretical design.

Recruitment into the field has often depended on a blend of university research, specialist mentoring and project-based experience. If AI systems reduce the duration or size of implementation projects, fewer students may gain the kind of hands-on exposure earlier cohorts received through extended group work.

The OpenSSL-backed programme appears intended to address that gap on a small scale by shifting the emphasis from long project apprenticeships to immersion in a concentrated professional setting. Rather than reproducing a months-long technical assignment, it gives selected students visibility into the people and discussions shaping open-source cryptography work.
