Unstoppable Domains & Secret Network launch .Secret Web3 TLD

Thu, 30th May 2024

In a significant move for privacy-focused digital domains, Unstoppable Domains (UD) and Secret Network have announced the launch of the .Secret Web3 top-level domain (TLD). This collaboration aims to provide a more secure and private option for digital identity and communication within the blockchain community.

The launch of the .Secret TLD offers users a variety of features including native cryptocurrency transactions, integration with hundreds of decentralised applications (dApps), and end-to-end encrypted messaging capabilities. This development marks a pivotal step towards enhancing privacy in domain registration and digital interactions.

UD and Secret Network also plan to apply for a branded Web2 generic top-level domain (gTLD) with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) in future. The decision on this application, expected in the 2026 ICANN gTLD issuance, will determine if .Secret can achieve the same recognition as established domains such as .com, .org, and .net.

Secret Network’s technology provides a confidential computing layer compatible with various blockchain platforms. This enables privacy features such as private voting, encrypted storage, and sealed-bid auctions. Through this partnership, both organisations intend to explore the possibility of integrating Secret Network's Confidential Computing Layer into Unstoppable Domains’ products. This could allow UD to offer private domain registration services, ensuring that users' identity and domain metadata remain fully encrypted and protected.

The new .Secret domains will serve not only as web addresses but also as comprehensive digital identifiers. These domains will enable users to create unique digital profiles, engage in confidential communication, and participate fully in the Web3 ecosystem. Owners of .Secret domains will be able to perform various blockchain functions, such as sending and receiving cryptocurrencies, logging into UD's 865 integrated dApps, receiving unique collectible badges, and privately messaging other Web3 domain holders via applications like Group Chat.

Unstoppable Messaging, powered by the Web3 messaging protocol XMTP, offers a secure platform for users to connect, stay updated on their favourite projects, and foster community interactions through decentralised, end-to-end encrypted messaging. All these functionalities converge within the .Secret Web3 domain, enhancing the user experience while prioritising privacy.

Sandy Carter, Chief Operating Officer of Unstoppable Domains, remarked, "With the new .Secret Web3 domains now launched, we take another step towards a future where brands can have more empowered and low-cost connections with their communities on the blockchain. Fans can show their appreciation for Secret Network by creating their own digital identity, while also leveraging the great privacy, security, and anonymity benefits of a .Secret domain."

Lisa Loud, Executive Director of the Secret Network Foundation, echoed this sentiment, stating, "Secret Network lets anyone build and use decentralised applications, or dApps, with encrypted data, customizable privacy, and confidential solutions for Web3. Now, with a .Secret domain, our fans, builders, active community, and anyone else who sees value in a .Secret domain, all have a great way to communicate with one another with continued anonymity. This is a truly unique step forward for our mission, and future ICANN approval would be the icing on the cake."

The collaboration between Unstoppable Domains and Secret Network is part of UD’s broader strategy to secure gTLDs within ICANN’s forthcoming application window. This initiative aims to offer brands or cities a cost-effective way to create naming systems and prepare for the next ICANN round. Approval of Web3 domain integration into the DNS would make them accessible to a wider audience while their Web2 equivalents would gain numerous blockchain-native features.
