2023 iSANZ Awards honour top talent in New Zealand cybersecurity
The finalists for the 2023 iSANZ Awards have been announced, recognising individuals and organisations across New Zealand for their work in cybersecurity and information security. The awards highlight efforts from both the private and public sectors addressing a range of emerging cyber challenges.
Category diversity
The 2023 awards feature nominees across six categories. Finalists include security teams, industry professionals, start-ups, and educational initiatives.
Teams recognised for secure development include BNZ Pixie Mob, Cassini Limited, and DevSecOps with the Golden Path at The Warehouse Group. In the Security Team of the Year category, BNZ Cyber and Governance Team, Datacom Cyber Defence Operations Centre, and EQC Security Team were named. The Project / Awareness Initiative of the Year award sees Ministry of Education Cyber Security and Digital Services Programmeme, Te Whatu Ora's Cyber Security Uplift Programmeme, and Cyber Skills Aotearoa nominated.
Industry leadership
Senior professionals acknowledged include Philip Whitmore, Conan Bradley, and Thomas Britton. The Up and Coming Cyber Security Star of the Year category honours Kent Wolstenholme, Megan Young, and Eleanor Wright for their emerging contributions. Start-up or New Business finalists are Cybershore Limited, Outfox, and CyberCure.
Judging process
Entries this year came from a pool of around fifty submissions, assessed by an independent judging panel. The panel focused on the quality and impact of the work being carried out in New Zealand to reduce cyber risk and improve awareness.
Kendra Ross, Chair of iSANZ, noted the strong field of entries.
"We've seen a remarkable array of submissions from individuals and organisations nationwide who are tackling the most pressing cybersecurity challenges with unwavering dedication, excellence, innovation, and leadership," said Ross, Chair, iSANZ.
Sector commitment
Kendra Ross emphasised that making the finalist list reflected ongoing commitment to information security. "We extend our gratitude to all entrants and finalists for their invaluable contributions in safeguarding networks, people, and our nation against cybercrime and malicious online activities. Collectively, we stand as a strong force - working to secure Aotearoa's digital tomorrow," said Ross.
Recognition for achievement
The iSANZ Awards will also induct a special nominee into the Hall of Fame category this year, recognising long-term contributions to the local cybersecurity sector. Sponsors for the awards include several New Zealand and international firms active in cybersecurity services and solutions.
Growing awareness
Nominees reflect a broad spectrum of participants, from established public institutions to consultancies and tech start-ups. The categories illustrate the growing emphasis placed on both high-level leadership and the importance of new talent in the sector.
