Zendesk has appointed David Hall-Johnston as Chief Technology Officer for Asia Pacific and Japan, expanding its regional technology leadership as it reports strong growth in AI-related business.

Based in Melbourne, Hall-Johnston will oversee regional technology strategy across Asia Pacific and Japan. His remit includes working with customers on AI adoption and linking regional enterprise requirements with Zendesk's global product and technology direction.

He joins from Dell Technologies, where he served as Chief Technology Officer for Australia and New Zealand. His career has also included senior roles at Hexaware Technologies, Cathay Pacific, the Australian Energy Market Operator, ANZ, and IBM.

The appointment comes as companies across the region move from testing artificial intelligence tools to deploying them in core service operations. Zendesk's AI bookings more than doubled in fiscal year 2026, reflecting broader demand from businesses seeking to connect AI systems, enterprise data, and staff workflows.

Regional focus

Asia Pacific and Japan have become an important market for software groups looking to expand AI use in customer service and employee support. Businesses in the region are placing greater emphasis on how AI tools connect with internal systems, along with the governance and security measures needed for wider deployment.

Hall-Johnston's role will include helping regional customers manage that shift while feeding local requirements into Zendesk's broader technology plans. The company is aiming to deepen its presence among enterprises that want to use AI in more complex service environments, rather than in limited pilot projects.

Adrian McDermott, Chief Technology Officer at Zendesk, outlined the backdrop to the appointment.

"Asia Pacific and Japan remain central to our global growth as organisations across the region move from experimenting with AI to deploying it across business-critical service operations," McDermott said. "This transition requires both a clear business case and a strong technical foundation. David brings deep experience in connecting technology strategy with enterprise transformation and will play an important role in helping customers across APAC move confidently towards an autonomous service workforce."

Enterprise demand

Technology suppliers have increasingly focused on the practical questions around AI adoption, including integration with existing applications, access to company data, and operational controls. That is particularly relevant in large organisations, where service operations often span multiple business systems and jurisdictions.

Hall-Johnston has held technology and executive posts across banking, aviation, energy, and IT services. That background gives him experience in regulated and operationally complex organisations, among the businesses now weighing broader AI deployment.

In Zendesk's view, enterprises across Asia Pacific are looking for ways to combine automated systems with human staff to resolve customer and employee issues from start to finish. As AI becomes embedded in day-to-day operations, architecture and oversight are becoming more important.

Hall-Johnston described the next stage of adoption as a shift from experimentation to operational use.

"The next phase of enterprise AI is about moving beyond pilots and embedding AI into core business operations," Hall-Johnston said. "That means securely connecting AI agents to enterprise data and systems so they can take action and resolve increasingly complex work end to end. Zendesk has built a powerful platform for this transition, and I'm excited to work with leaders across APAC to help them scale an autonomous service workforce securely and responsibly."
