Why women can be leaders when it comes to AI
AI is everywhere right now – fast and, at first glance, authoritative. It speaks in a tone that sounds certain, even when it's wrong. And when a tool feels this capable, people understandably assume it's checked its sources and must be safe to use.
Not everyone gets to assume, though. Women in cybersecurity and other high‑stakes technical fields have spent their careers in environments where assumptions are a liability – where your work is scrutinised, where you earn credibility through discipline, precision and responsibility. These qualities are exactly what is required of us in the AI era.
Central to all of that is validation, but who validates the output? And what do we do in workplaces where people now trust AI more than the human mind?
Outsourcing thinking multiplies risk
One of the most worrying habits AI can create is people allowing AI to do their thinking for them. Analysts accepting summaries at face value. Teams copying recommendations straight from an AI agent into decision papers.
Women in cybersecurity know better than to fall into this trap. Many of us have spent years demonstrating – sometimes repeatedly – that our work stands up to scrutiny. We learn to validate, to double-check, to show evidence. Those habits, often formed because the bar can be higher for us, turn out to be exactly the behaviours responsible AI adoption demands.
AI can help you think, but it cannot think for you. When people forget that distinction, risk multiplies.
Sharing before thinking exposes data
The second major risk is careless input. I've seen organisations upload confidential files into ChatGPT without considering where that data goes or who might access it. In one case, a smaller partner company uploaded a client's internal documents to speed up a task. Those files were captured by attackers, and executives were later ransomed with information they never knew had left their systems.
An executive's child had details from therapy sessions leaked after a practitioner fed notes into an AI tool. The information was used to extort the executive and threaten the child's school.
Even criminals run into the same problem. A suspect in the California Palisades Fire had asked ChatGPT for advice about committing arson, and those logs became evidence. Experts are saying prosecutors are beginning to subpoena AI logs to establish intent, meaning that what you typed, and when, could one day be used to prove state of mind in court.
In all of these examples, whether the intent was criminal or benign, someone assumed confidentiality and anonymity when it was neither.
Why women are poised to lead
The pattern is the same across every one of these stories. Nobody stopped to think, question or validate. And AI cannot fill that gap – that falls on us.
As we mark International Women's Day, it's important to remember that many women in cybersecurity and across technology have spent their careers building the exact capabilities the AI era now demands – comfort with scrutiny, resilience under pressure, the confidence to challenge assumptions and the discipline to validate. These are the leadership qualities needed to build a culture of responsible AI.
The success of AI depends on people who will ask hard questions, own the outcomes and refuse to outsource their judgment. Many women are already doing exactly that – and that is precisely what AI leadership demands.
