WatchGuard has launched three new Firebox firewall appliances aimed at managed service providers and enterprise organisations.

The new models - the Firebox M4850, M5850 and M6850 - are rackmount appliances for larger and distributed network environments. They include built-in 25G and 100G connectivity and an OCP 3.0 expansion bay.

The systems are designed for customers that need higher network throughput without adding to IT operations. They also come with redundant power supplies and hot-swappable fans as standard, a design intended to support uptime in campus and mission-critical deployments.

The launch comes as managed service providers and in-house IT teams manage rising volumes of encrypted traffic and broader network upgrades. Those shifts have increased demand for security products that fit into faster network environments while remaining manageable across multiple sites and customers.

Andrew Young, Chief Product Officer at WatchGuard, said the new range was designed to address that trade-off.

"MSPs and IT teams shouldn't have to choose between enterprise-grade performance and operational simplicity," said Andrew Young, Chief Product Officer at WatchGuard. "With our new high-performance Firebox appliances, we're enabling partners to confidently support larger, more demanding customer environments while maintaining the streamlined deployment, management, and licensing experience that defines the WatchGuard platform."

Network demand

The three models span different performance tiers, giving partners and enterprise buyers options as their network requirements grow. The inclusion of native 25G and 100G connectivity reflects the increasing use of high-speed links in campus and distributed enterprise settings.

WatchGuard says it is the first security vendor to include an industry-standard OCP 3.0 expansion bay in a firewall. That gives the appliances a path to support future networking changes without requiring a full platform redesign.

Analysts say this part of the market is under pressure from customers seeking broader scalability without greater operational overhead. For managed service providers in particular, the challenge is supporting larger customer estates while keeping deployment and administration consistent.

"Midmarket and distributed enterprise organisations increasingly require security solutions that provide scalability, performance and efficacy without adding complexity to the operation of the solution," said Pete Finalle, Research Manager at IDC. "Solutions that can balance operational and security outcomes while reducing overhead are particularly attractive to MSPs seeking versatile solutions that can expand into larger customer environments."

Channel focus

The launch also underlines WatchGuard's emphasis on the managed services channel. The appliances are available through its global partner network, aligning with its long-standing focus on service providers and distributors rather than direct-only enterprise sales.

That channel strategy matters because firewall buying decisions in the midmarket and distributed enterprise segment often rest with service providers managing customer networks on an outsourced basis. Hardware that supports high-speed links, standardised management and operational resilience can be easier for those partners to fit into existing service models.

Feedback from the distribution channel points to that requirement. Infinigate, a WatchGuard distributor, said the new systems could help partners support larger customer environments without changing how they manage day-to-day security operations.

"Our customers expect high performance and reliability, but they also expect simplicity," said Kris Vastenavondt, Security Engineer and WatchGuard Trainer at Infinigate, a WatchGuard distributor. "The new Firebox appliances give us the ability to support larger and more complex environments while continuing to manage security efficiently across customers."

The new appliances are now available through WatchGuard's global partner network.
