Oracle and OpenAI have expanded their partnership to integrate OpenAI models, ChatGPT and Codex, with Oracle's applications, data and cloud infrastructure. The move adds tools for business workflows, application development, security testing and small business operations.

The expanded product set includes Oracle AI Workspace, Oracle App Composer, Oracle AI Security Mesh and Oracle AI SMB Bundle. Oracle said the products are designed to let staff use ChatGPT with Oracle systems, build applications through Codex, test systems for vulnerabilities and give smaller businesses a bundled starting point for software and operations.

Oracle AI Workspace is designed to connect employees to Oracle applications, enterprise data and cloud services through ChatGPT. Using ChatGPT plugins, workers can access information, complete approved workflows and take action alongside Oracle systems.

Oracle said the workspace is designed to connect Oracle Fusion Applications, NetSuite, Oracle AI Database, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and other enterprise tools and data sources. It includes governance, approvals and controls for enterprise use.

Application tools

The expanded partnership also includes Oracle App Composer, which Oracle said will let employees build applications with Codex without coding expertise. Oracle will manage deployment and operations for those applications on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.

App Composer connects applications to approved Oracle data and workflows and provides access to services including OCI Kubernetes Engine and Oracle Autonomous AI Database. It also applies identity, permissions, networking, audit and application lifecycle controls to applications created through the service.

Oracle said the tool will also support APEXlang, which it described as a technology designed to speed up generative development while avoiding application code that is difficult to maintain.

Security testing

The partnership also covers cybersecurity through Oracle AI Security Mesh, a managed service that uses OpenAI cyber models. Oracle said the service is designed to help customers find and fix vulnerabilities in applications and infrastructure across Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, other clouds and on-premises environments.

Customers set authorised testing boundaries and control the scope of testing, while Oracle manages operational safeguards intended to reduce the risk of outages or disruption during those tests. The service combines OpenAI models with Oracle testing tools, validation processes and testing infrastructure.

For smaller companies, Oracle introduced Oracle AI SMB Bundle as a free-to-start package. The offer includes ChatGPT Business, Oracle AI Workspace, Codex, Oracle App Composer, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and NetSuite QuickStart.

Oracle said the bundle also includes USD $12,000 in Oracle cloud credits each year and is aimed at helping smaller businesses build products and run functions such as invoicing and cash flow management. Terms, conditions and restrictions apply.

Executive comments

The announcement signals broader ties between the software group and the artificial intelligence company as businesses look for ways to apply generative AI tools within existing software environments.

"OpenAI is transforming how enterprises solve business problems, from chat, to coding, to analytics, to autonomous agents," said Clay Magouyrk, Chief Executive Officer, Oracle. "With this new product suite, we are uniting their transformative AI capabilities with Oracle applications, data, and cloud infrastructure-technology that businesses around the world rely on to run their most critical operations."

Greg Brockman, President and Co-Founder, OpenAI, said the arrangement reflects demand from companies that want artificial intelligence tools within the systems they already use.

"More businesses are choosing OpenAI as we make it easier to put AI to work through the tools and systems they already use," said Greg Brockman, President and Co-Founder, OpenAI. "Our expanded partnership with Oracle helps bring that opportunity to more companies, putting frontier AI into everyday operations so teams can build software faster, strengthen security and take on more complex knowledge work."
