HID has upgraded its FARGO DTC ID card printer line, with changes to the DTC1250e, DTC4500e and DTC1500 models.

The updated printers feature newer hardware and electronics intended to increase output speed and reduce interruptions in high-volume card issuance.

The changes target organisations that produce employee, student, patient and government ID cards, including users in education, healthcare, government and corporate settings. The printers are designed to support day-to-day issuance by front-desk, HR and administrative teams that need to produce cards consistently with limited technical support.

Print quality has also been updated. The printers now offer 300 x 600 dpi resolution, an enhanced colour profile and adjustable K-panel printing to improve text sharpness, logo clarity and colour accuracy on printed cards.

Security changes

Across the DTC range, HID has added AES-256-GCM encryption and resin scramble data protection. The DTC1500 and DTC4500e also include a built-in watermark overlay that can be customised as an extra visual security feature.

The additions come as organisations face tighter requirements around handling cardholder data and producing secure credentials. The revised line is intended to help users strengthen card security without changing base hardware across their programmes.

Maintenance and support are another focus of the update. An integrated diagnostic utility and a Colour Assist tool are now built into the printer driver, allowing operators to identify and address common issues without contacting support.

On the DTC1250e, an optional OLED SmartScreen is intended to make routine operation easier for non-technical staff and help users manage everyday printer tasks without raising IT support requests.

Scaling options

HID is also emphasising upgrade paths for customers that expect card issuance needs to grow. The printers support field-upgradable dual-side printing and encoding options, allowing organisations to add functions later rather than replace the base unit.

The approach is aimed at customers whose credential programmes expand over time, whether through higher issuance volumes or broader card functionality. The DTC1500 and DTC4500e are also compatible with FARGO Connect, HID's cloud-based card printing platform for monitoring printer fleets.

Apryl Erickson, Vice President and Head of FARGO at HID, said the product line builds on the company's long history in card printing. "We've been at this for a long time. For more than three decades, organisations have trusted us to power their ID badging programs," Erickson said.

"With thousands of printers in the field worldwide, we're excited to build on that legacy by delivering enhanced solutions that provide greater value to our end users and support their mission-critical issuance processes," she added.

Market context

ID card printers remain a specialist segment within physical access and identity infrastructure, serving organisations that need to produce credentials on site rather than outsource issuance. Demand is often shaped by security requirements, card design standards, issuance volume and the need to link credentials to access control or identity management systems.

For users running decentralised issuance, downtime and consumables management are also practical concerns. Support for high-capacity ribbons in the updated printers is intended to reduce reload frequency and minimise lost time during busy issuance periods.

The printers are backed by three-year product warranties and include printer health monitoring. HID also said the line has been engineered for efficient energy use, reflecting broader customer interest in running costs and equipment lifespan.

HID, part of ASSA ABLOY, sells identity and access products to governments, educational institutions, hospitals, financial institutions and industrial customers in more than 100 countries. The DTC printer line sits within its wider identity portfolio, which also includes access control and identity management systems.

The enhanced printer portfolio is available now, with regional availability for the upgraded DTC1250e and DTC4500e beginning later in the current rollout and the enhanced DTC1500 to follow.
