Dynatrace adds AI agents for governed IT operations

Dynatrace has introduced new artificial intelligence agents and no-code tools for autonomous IT operations, along with governance controls designed to keep humans in oversight of agent actions.

The update expands the Dynatrace Intelligence platform from analysis and recommendation into automated incident triage and remediation. New additions include an Autonomous SRE Agent, a Cloud SRE Agent, an Agent Builder for custom agents, updates to Dynatrace Assist, and a broader set of integrations with cloud providers and enterprise software platforms.

The move comes as companies push artificial intelligence further into day-to-day operations while trying to limit risk. Research cited by Dynatrace shows 74% of organisations plan to adopt agentic AI within two years, while only 21% have a mature governance model in place.

The Autonomous SRE Agent is designed to respond when a new problem is detected. It checks whether the issue belongs to an existing investigation and, if so, adds further insight and links it to the active case.

The Cloud SRE Agent is aimed at remediation across public cloud environments. Dynatrace says it works with agents across Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud, and records findings in a single auditable trail.

Dynatrace is also introducing Agent Builder, which lets customers create and deploy custom AI agents without writing code. The tool is intended to help teams adapt autonomous workflows to the systems and processes already used within their organisations.

Alongside the new agents, Dynatrace is expanding integrations with tools including ServiceNow, Atlassian, and PagerDuty, as well as developer tools and AI technologies. The goal is to place investigation and remediation steps inside the software operations and engineering teams already use.

Customer view

One early customer highlighted the pressure on operations teams managing complex IT environments.

"Our operations teams are under constant pressure to manage increasingly complex environments while maintaining reliability and speed," said Angel Marchena, Director of Technical Operations at Western Governors University. "Dynatrace helps us reduce manual effort by providing automation that is grounded in real-time context, which allows our teams to focus on higher-value work while improving operational outcomes."

Dynatrace framed the launch around a distinction between probabilistic AI outputs and what it described as deterministic system understanding. In practice, the company argues that automation needs current data about the specific environment where it is acting, along with clear controls over what an agent can do.

That argument is becoming more prominent as businesses weigh the benefits of autonomous software against concerns about oversight. Dynatrace also cited research showing that 35% of organisations say they could not shut down a rogue AI agent if one emerged, underscoring why auditability and control are becoming central buying criteria.

Market pressure

The broader observability software market has increasingly shifted toward automation as vendors try to connect monitoring data more closely to incident management and remediation. The addition of AI agents reflects a wider industry push to reduce manual intervention in areas such as root-cause analysis, ticketing, and cloud operations.

Industry analysts say the challenge is not simply getting AI to generate suggestions, but ensuring any resulting action can be traced and governed. That is especially important for large companies running applications across multiple cloud environments and business systems.

"Enterprises investing in AI-driven observability have an opportunity to turn data into intelligence that translates into trusted, autonomous action," said Stephen Elliot, Group Vice President at IDC. "The gap between AI-generated insight and safe, governed execution is one of the biggest concerns; customers need a deterministic, real-time context with automation and auditability to drive trusted and reliable outcomes."

Cloud SRE Agent, the updated Dynatrace Assist, and the broader integration ecosystem are already available to SaaS customers on the Dynatrace platform. Autonomous SRE Agent and Agent Builder are expected to be available in August.
