Check Point introduces API Discovery to bolster cloud security

Thu, 23rd May 2024

Check Point Software Technologies has enhanced its Web Application Firewall (WAF) by introducing a powerful new API Discovery feature. This addition aims to bolster the security of organisations' cloud assets by providing deep insights into their API inventories across cloud environments.

The API Discovery feature allows security teams to identify publicly exposed or vulnerable APIs swiftly. By leveraging an AI-optimised schema, Check Point’s Cloud Native Application Protection Platform (CNAPP) aims to enable organisations to enforce API security measures effectively, thereby mitigating the risks of unauthorised access and data breaches.

This feature comes at a time when cloud security concerns are mounting. According to Check Point's 2024 Cloud Security Report, there has been a significant increase in cloud security incidents, rising from 24% in 2023 to 61% in 2024. The introduction of the API Discovery feature seeks to address this growing threat landscape by offering more robust API protection.

Check Point’s CloudGuard WAF is an integral component of the CNAPP solution, which is designed to secure cloud web applications and APIs. Unlike traditional WAFs, CloudGuard WAF uses advanced machine learning instead of conventional signatures to detect and block known and unknown attacks in real-time, providing protection against zero-day threats such as Log4j and MOVEit.

For the second consecutive year, Check Point has been recognised as a leader in GigaOm’s Radar for Application and API Security. GigaOm analyst Don MacVittie highlighted Check Point's API protection capabilities, particularly noting the highest score achieved for its innovative API import and discovery features. MacVittie remarked that Check Point is among the few vendors that have transitioned from a feature-focused to a platform-centric approach, underscoring the collaborative efficacy of its Infinity Platform.

Oded Gonda, Vice President of Technology and Innovation at Check Point Software Technologies, commented on the new feature, stating, “API Discovery completes our CloudGuard CNAPP and WAF solution, offering an impressive level of protection for cloud-native applications. By focusing on the needs of modern enterprises, Check Point provides both API Discovery and protection for known attacks as well as pre-emptive measures against future threats.”

This development positions Check Point at the forefront of API and application security, supporting enterprises in their digital transformation journeys. The company’s commitment to advanced security measures aims to provide organisations with the tools needed to navigate the increasingly complex landscape of cloud threats effectively.

Check Point’s CloudGuard WAF, bolstered by the new API Discovery feature, is set to provide a more comprehensive security solution, ensuring that businesses can secure their digital assets against evolving cyber threats.
