AI operationalisation challenges explored in new report

Tue, 28th Jan 2025

Thoughtworks has released the fifth edition of its Looking Glass report, focusing on the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the coming years and the necessary steps for its effective use in business operations.

The report is composed of five segments, referred to as 'lenses', each aimed at providing insights into significant technological trends. Rachel Laycock, Chief Technology Officer at Thoughtworks, commented on the latest edition by stating, "While the 2024 edition of the Looking Glass flagged the ubiquity of AI following a year of hype and mainstream interest, in this edition we've foregrounded the very real — if often overlooked — challenge of actually operationalising AI effectively."

She elaborated on the urgency to modernise data platforms and apply responsible practices for deriving sustainable value from AI efforts as AI maintains a central role in industry discussions.

The first lens emphasises the difficulties in integrating AI into business practice. Even as the use of AI, particularly generative AI, becomes more common, the actual application of AI models remains a complex task. This is due in part to the challenges involved in moving these models into production.

Another key area highlighted in the report is the data value chain.

Thoughtworks points out the necessity of constructing and optimising data architectures and technologies to ensure their security and efficiency, reinforcing the widely accepted view of data as critical to business operations.

Re-imagining responsible technology is another focal point of the report. As AI becomes more integrated into varied operations, evaluating the potential risks and responsibilities associated with this technology is crucial. The report stresses the need for renewed emphasis on responsible technology, particularly as generative AI evolves.

Enhancing user experiences through multimodal interactions is the fourth topic covered.

Innovations in AI have led to more sophisticated human interactions with products and services. Businesses now face the challenge of creating context-specific multimodal interactions.

The final lens discusses the growing intersection of physical and digital realms. This intersection not only affects consumer products like smart refrigerators and wearables but also holds significant implications for business logistics, supply chain management, and maintenance.

The annual update of the Looking Glass report reflects Thoughtworks' commitment to adapting to the rapid changes in technology and shifting business priorities.
