Seagate launches SkyHawk AI 24TB drive for AI-enabled edge security
Thu, 8th Feb 2024

Seagate Technology Holdings plc, a global leader in mass-data storage infrastructure solutions, announced the launch of its latest product, the Seagate SkyHawk AI 24TB hard disk drive (HDD). The new HDD is custom-built for video and imaging applications (VIA) and perfectly suited for Enterprise network video recorders (NVRs) enabled with AI. This announcement comes in the wake of the successful launch of the firm's high-capacity Seagate Exos X24 24TB conventional magnetic recording (CMR)-based hard drive.

The introduction of the SkyHawk AI 24TB HDD is viewed as a pivotal move by Seagate, catering to the intensifying mass data requirements in the edge security space. As AI-powered applications become more and more mainstream, the capability to store and retrieve colossal data sets efficiently has become a prime driver of both performance and total cost of ownership (TCO). The SkyHawk AI 24TB is an advanced video-optimised drive that tackles the challenge of running and recording video footage while supporting GPU analytics on edge security platforms.

The new HDD is built to intelligently scale, catering to an array of surveillance environments by supporting up to 64 HD video camera streams plus an additional 32 AI streams. The SkyHawk AI 24TB, designed specifically for NVR environments running AI applications for edge security, supports 10,000 hours of video and analytics. This new hard drive is capable of managing the heavy-duty work requisites of 24/7 AI-enabled surveillance systems, with Seagate's powerful ImagePerfect AI firmware ensuring zero dropped frames.

As an enterprise-level offering, the SkyHawk AI 24TB HDD boasts an impressive mean time between failures (MTBF) rate of up to 2.5 million hours. Furthermore, with an annual workload capability of 550TB, it outperforms standard surveillance and desktop hard drives by three and ten times respectively. The in-built SkyHawk Health Management tool monitors environmental and usage conditions, and recommends preventative actions if required. Additional features include RAID RapidRebuild, which effectively rebuilds volumes up to three times faster than standard hard drives. The product also comes with a five-year limited warranty and three years of Seagate's Rescue Data Recovery Service.

Expected to be available from March onwards, the SkyHawk AI 24TB HDD offers significant advantages for the edge security industry. Being able to accommodate the demanding workloads of AI-enabled 24/7 surveillance systems and the rising mass data requirements of organisations, the SkyHawk AI 24TB HDD reinforces Seagate's commitment to supporting the continued growth of AI and edge security technologies. The new HDD will be available for AU$1,499 or NZ$1,699.
