MATTR launches digital credential platform on AWS NZ

Thu, 12th Mar 2026

MATTR has made its MATTR VII digital credential platform generally available in the Amazon Web Services Asia Pacific (New Zealand) Region, giving New Zealand customers the option to run services on in-country cloud infrastructure.

The move makes MATTR one of the early users of the AWS New Zealand Region for production workloads. It also extends MATTR's regional footprint, which includes standard cloud deployments in Australia, North America, Europe, and Canada.

Local availability allows New Zealand organisations to use MATTR VII to issue and verify digital credentials while processing data on on-shore infrastructure. The platform also includes what MATTR calls trust network infrastructure, which it positions as a foundation for broader credential and verification ecosystems.

The launch comes as public sector agencies and regulated industries face tighter expectations about where data is stored and processed. Many New Zealand organisations have relied on offshore cloud regions for identity and verification workloads, raising questions about jurisdiction, data residency, and contractual controls, particularly for services involving personal information.

MATTR is positioning the AWS New Zealand Region deployment as a way for customers to keep core customer data within New Zealand jurisdiction. It also points to performance benefits from hosting workloads closer to end users, including lower latency.

Data residency

MATTR says local hosting better aligns government and regulated organisations with New Zealand data residency policies. It also points to greater assurance for critical systems and improved confidence in handling sensitive personal information.

"This is a genuinely meaningful step forward for New Zealand's digital trust ecosystem," said Claire Barber, CEO of MATTR. "For a long time, organisations have had to balance innovation against data residency requirements. With this launch, that trade-off disappears. Customers can now access MATTR's complete platform while processing core customer data in New Zealand, alongside the scale and resilience of our global infrastructure."

The platform's focus on verifiable digital credentials reflects a wider shift among governments and regulated sectors towards reusable proofs and privacy-focused identity patterns. Digital credentials can represent an entitlement, licence, or status, and can be presented for verification in different contexts. This model has been discussed in many markets as an alternative to repeatedly sharing full identity records.

MATTR has not disclosed customer names tied to the New Zealand deployment or pricing for local use. It says the local option will suit agencies and organisations that need on-shore processing and strong controls around personal and sensitive data.

Operational build

MATTR's operations team says it worked with AWS as the region came online, bringing key elements of the platform into the local region to match service expectations in other markets.

"We worked closely with AWS to bring key MATTR capabilities into the AWS New Zealand Region as soon as it launched in late 2025, to provide customers the same reliability, scalability, and security we provide in Australia, North America, and Europe," said Martin Eichenberg, Head of Site Reliability & Operations at MATTR.

The New Zealand region has been a focus for vendors and public sector IT leaders seeking more local hosting options, particularly for systems handling identity data, citizen records, and regulated financial information. A local cloud region can reduce dependence on trans-Tasman or international links for critical services, though organisations still need to manage their own governance and security controls.

AWS recently appointed a country manager for New Zealand. The cloud provider said the MATTR deployment reflects the type of customer it expected the region to attract, particularly those serving regulated sectors.

"MATTR is a great example of the innovation we're enabling with the AWS Region in New Zealand. As one of our first customers to deploy production workloads locally, MATTR is helping government and regulated industries adopt modern digital trust solutions while providing data processing residency, low latency, and world-class security and availability. We're excited to support MATTR's goal of accelerating New Zealand's digital transformation," said Manuel Bohnet, Country Manager for New Zealand, Amazon Web Services.

MATTR says the New Zealand deployment complements its existing cloud deployments in other regions, and expects local hosting to broaden participation in digital trust ecosystems among organisations with strict residency requirements.

"This is about more than infrastructure," said Barber. "It is about unlocking momentum. Having MATTR available on-shore opens the door for many more organisations to participate in digital trust ecosystems, knowing their data stays local and their solutions are future-ready."
