DTEX Systems enhances platform to mitigate AI-related risks

Thu, 30th May 2024

DTEX Systems has announced the introduction of new capabilities within its DTEX InTERCEPT platform aimed at mitigating insider risks linked to the use of generative AI (GenAI) platforms such as ChatGPT. The enhanced platform is designed to help companies monitor and analyse the content that employees upload to large language models (LLMs), with a view to preventing the inadvertent or deliberate sharing of proprietary data and intellectual property (IP).

In light of the growing utilisation of GenAI platforms for business purposes, recent research from Gartner has shown that 55% of enterprises have either trialed or implemented generative AI solutions. Despite the potential benefits of enhanced efficiency and innovation, there is a concomitant increase in security risks. Employees may unwittingly upload sensitive information to public AI models, thereby exposing their organisations to significant insider threats.

The DTEX 2024 Insider Risk Investigations Report has highlighted this issue, revealing that 92% of organisations see the internal use of AI tools as a major security concern. Moreover, 90% of these organisations expressed a need for tools that provide better supervision to manage the risks associated with GenAI. When employees upload data or IP to public LLMs, the chances of data loss rise significantly, underscoring the need for proactive insider risk management.

The improvements to the DTEX InTERCEPT platform allow for detailed inspection of content uploaded to GenAI platforms, identifying markers such as IP and other sensitive information. This capability helps to prevent data from being shared inappropriately, whether due to malicious intent or negligence. The platform’s web traffic inspection features offer enhanced visibility into user activities while maintaining adherence to privacy standards. Security teams can enforce policies centrally, enabling secure access to a multitude of GenAI applications. This includes the ability to distinguish between enterprise accounts and personal usage, such as that of Microsoft CoPilot.

Marshall Heilman, CEO of DTEX Systems, elaborated on the significant implications of GenAI technology usage within organisations. "While employees in good faith use this technology to boost efficiency and drive innovation, they also elevate the risk of data leaks, data theft, and privacy violations. The enhancements to DTEX InTERCEPT will help companies strike the right balance between harnessing the transformative benefits of GenAI and protecting their data and IP from threats,” Heilman stated.

DTEX InTERCEPT is unique in its integration of behavioural science, technology, intelligence, and services, providing comprehensive and proactive protection against insider threats without infringing on personal privacy. This year, DTEX also introduced the AI3 Risk Assistant, a feature of the InTERCEPT platform that utilizes natural language processing to offer detailed insights into insider risk and intent. The inclusion of this feature underlines the platform’s commitment to using AI-driven innovation as a significant enabler for businesses, allowing them to leverage these capabilities with adequate oversight to minimise risk.

DTEX Systems's approach combines data science with AI and behavioural psychology to preempt potential data breaches. DTEX InTERCEPT provides Data Loss Prevention, User Activity Monitoring, and User Behaviour Analytics in a single, lightweight platform that helps mission-critical entities protect their most sensitive assets. The platform's design prioritises privacy while delivering early warning indicators to detect and deter insider risks on a large scale.
