Avnet has appointed its first chief information security officer, as the distributor ups its efforts to ensure its information assets – and those of partners and customers – are protected.

Sean Valcamp is charged with responsibility for Avnet's global IT security in addition ot enterprise  architecture and strategic planning for IT, Avnet says.

Steve Phillips, Avnet chief information officer, says Avnet's position ‘at the heart of the technology supply chain' means information security is a critical focus area for the company.

“Sean's appointment as Avnet's CISO is one of several ways that we are demonstrating our continued commitment to protecting our information assets, as well as those entrusted to us by our employees, customers and partners.

Valcamp, who has more than 25 years IT experience in IT security, technology strategy, enterprise architecture and solutions development, has been with Avnet 16 years. The distributor says over the years Valcamp has significantly strenthened its IT security capabilities, including educating employees on security, establishing a global information security policy and building a security operations team that protects Avnet from security threats.

Valcamp also developed Avnet's annual State of IT Security: What you need to Know report, detailing major cybersecurity threats and tactics.
